Soon we may see mechanical dogs as a part of our military operations. This is no joke! The robotics company, Boston Dynamics, built the first robotic dog back in 2007. People were blown away with the ability and power that the mechanical dog had.
Recently, Boston Dynamics developed a new toy. It is a new mechanical dog they call the AlphaDog. It is bigger, tougher, faster and scarier than the first mechanical dog creation.
The official name is “Legged Squad Support System,” or LS3 for short, and it is being financially supported by the Pentagon agency DARPA, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The Marines are involved with the project as well.
The AlphaDog, who can operate without a driver, can travel up to 20 miles carrying 400 pounds without refueling. The AlphaDog can be programmed to follow a leader using a computer and can also travel to a selected place by following GPS and sensors.
AlphaDog can traverse over rocks and trees effortlessly. The mechanical dog can walk, run and gallop. While AlphaDog is walking, a representative from Boston Dynamics tries to push the dog over; it does not work. The AlphaDog is barely moved from its path. Then two guys from Boston Dynamics shove the dog from the side as it is walking. They cannot push the mechanical beast over.
The AlphaDog also has the ability to stand back up while lying on its side or back.
These robotic dogs would not make good pets to say the least. The goal is to eventually used theses AlphaDogs for military situations. They would save human lives, and be able to help with transport.
